USE-OF-FORCE ANALYSIS

COURTROOM TESTIMONY

Since 1997, Erick has built unmatched expertise in evaluating law enforcement use of force, with a specialty in Police K9 operations. His career began as a Field Training Officer, where he assessed recruits’ decision-making and force application. He later expanded that role as the department’s Field Training Officer, Advanced Basic Academy Coordinator, and Class Officer at the Southern Arizona Training Center. As a SWAT operator and Team Leader, Erick designed and led complex tactical scenarios to test officers’ ability to make sound decisions under pressure. As a Patrol and K9 Unit Supervisor, he formally evaluated nearly 100 use-of-force incidents—85% involving K9 deployments—ranging from hard empty-hand control and takedowns to K9 apprehensions. Drawing on his background as an AZ POST-certified Defensive Tactics Instructor, patrol officer, and K9 Unit trainer and handler, Erick ensured all evaluations were grounded in department policy, case law, and industry best practices.

Today, Erick provides professional use-of-force expert services for attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and courts. As a former law enforcement professional, Erick brings raw authenticity and lived experience to the stage. Having served in high-risk assignments, Erick encountered traumatic events that left lasting marks, including Post-Traumatic Stress and Moral Injury. Rather than allowing those experiences to define or silence him, Erick has transformed them into powerful lessons of resilience, recovery, and purpose.

With candor and courage, Erick speaks about the unseen burdens many in uniform carry—the split-second decisions, the moral conflicts, and the hidden scars that follow officers long after the shift ends. Audiences gain not only a deeper understanding of trauma in law enforcement but also the hope that healing and growth are possible.

Through compelling storytelling, Erick challenges stigma, inspires open conversation, and provides practical insights for officers, organizations, and communities seeking to better support those who serve. Erick’s message is one of perseverance, compassion, and reclaiming strength in the aftermath of hardship.
